Just because you’re playing a serious role doesn’t mean you can’t allow your sense of humor to surface. Actor David Niven had a wonderful sense of humor that found its way into most roles he played. Cathy Bates also has a way of injecting humor into many of the roles she’s played. I love watching actors that bring all of themselves to the work.

I can’t stress enough the importance of taking the “polite routine” out of your work. You gain nothing by holding back. Follow your impulses. Your body doesn’t rationalize, it reacts.  Emmy doesn’t let David hesitate and he returns the favor. “Good actors are generous actors.”

Scene Tip 2: A “beat change” is a change in emotion that is caused by an action. You don’t discover the change by “thinking” about it. The “beat change” is intuited. Find out why it changed. What did the other person do to you that caused the change? Remember: we find the meanings through our bodies. Not through our heads. Acting is doing, not thinking. ‘Shrevie’ (Daniel Stern) admonishes wife ‘Beth’ (Ellen Barkin) for touching his records in Barry Levinson’s “Diner”. The “pinch” provokes the change in action and emotion.

Roeshawn Hunter After attending countless workshops and classes in search of a great Meisner class, I found one when I met Alan Gordon. From the first day - I learned much about the acting technique - including the history, successful actors who use it and the exercises associated with it. Alan's humor and patience creates a great aura and class environment. He teaches with passion and guides you through each exercise until you gain the confidence to move to the next step.
